It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a> – that time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books, sort of a Very Silly Phrasebook.<\/p>\n

Tonight I’m looking at one of my favorite books in English, Book of a Thousand Days<\/em><\/a>, by Shannon Hale, Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em>. Last time we were in this book<\/a>, we left off on page 87 in the English edition, Day 684, and Seite 99<\/em> in the Deutsch<\/em> edition, Tag 684<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Let’s begin with the first sentence of the section:<\/p>\n

“Here’s something true about darkness — after enough time, you begin to see things that aren’t there.”
\n= Es ist wahr, dass man nach einiger Zeit in der Dunkelheit anf\u00e4ngt, Dinge zu sehen, die es gar nicht gibt.<\/em>
\n(“It is true, that one after some time in the darkness begins, things to see, that are absolutely not there.”)<\/p>\n

“fade away” = verblassen<\/em><\/p>\n

I hope you won’t ever need to say this, but now you know how:
\n“Shiny gray dream rats” = Gl\u00e4nzende graue Traumratten<\/em><\/p>\n

I like it on the rare occasions German is shorter:
\n“but don’t make a sound” = ger\u00e4uschlos<\/em> (“noiseless”)<\/p>\n

“behind bricks” = eingemauert<\/em> (“in-bricked”)<\/p>\n

“thoughts and questions and memories” = Gedanken, Fragen und Erinnerungen<\/em><\/p>\n

“surrounded” = umzingelt<\/em><\/p>\n

“we were on our own” = waren wir auf uns gestellt<\/em><\/p>\n

“Weedflower” = Grasblume<\/em><\/p>\n

“hunched up” = verkrochen<\/em><\/p>\n

“rags” = Lumpen<\/em><\/p>\n

“We survived.” = Wir \u00fcberlebten.<\/em><\/p>\n

“healthy enough” = einigerma\u00dfer gesund<\/em><\/p>\n

“mudfish” = Schlammfische<\/em><\/p>\n

This one’s a lot longer in German:
\n“watered the milk gray”
\n= verl\u00e4ngerten die Milch mit Wasser, bis sie grau war<\/em>
\n(“lengthened the milk with water, until it was gray”)<\/p>\n

This is a lovely sentence:
\n“we laughed enough to shake the forest and ripple the rivers.”
\n= lachten wir auch so laut, dass der Wald erbebte und die Fl\u00fcsse Wellen schlugen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“parting songs” = Abschiedslieder<\/em><\/p>\n

“Ancestors’ Realm” = Reich der Ahnen<\/em><\/p>\n

I like this adjustment to the translation:
\n“with no shaman around for miles”
\n= weil meistens weit und breit kein Schamane in Sicht ist<\/em>
\n(“because mostly far and wide no shaman in sight is”)<\/p>\n

“haunting” = gespukt<\/em><\/p>\n

“winter coverings” = Winterh\u00fclle<\/em><\/p>\n

“aching work, longtime work”
\n= eine anstrengende langwierige Schufterei<\/em><\/p>\n

“stagger” = taumelte<\/em><\/p>\n

“summer pastures” = Sommerweiden<\/em><\/p>\n

“ill-fated life” = Pech verfolgtes Dasein<\/em> (“bad luck following existence”)<\/p>\n

“purring” = schnurrend<\/em><\/p>\n

“lap” = Scho\u00df<\/em><\/p>\n

“rodents” = Nagetiere<\/em><\/p>\n

“a bowl of food” = Eine Schale Essen<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a use of the prefix sonder-<\/em>:
\n“Is that strange?” = Ist das sonderbar?<\/em>
\n(It means “special,” but that’s not always good!)<\/p>\n

“chiefs” = H\u00e4uptlinge<\/em><\/p>\n

“I miss myself, how I used to be.”
\n= Ich vermisse auch mich selbst, mein fr\u00fcheres Ich.<\/em><\/p>\n

I’ll finish with this sad sentence from the end of Day 780:
\n“Time is a wind that keeps blowing in my face and mumbling words that don’t make sense.”
\n= Die Zeit ist ein Wind, der mir ins Gesicht bl\u00e4st und sinnlose Worte murmelt.<\/em><\/p>\n
