{"id":374,"date":"2009-02-03T00:36:23","date_gmt":"2009-02-03T04:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/03\/review-of-the-guernsey-literary-and-potato-peel-pie-society-by-mary-ann-shaffer-and-annie-barrows\/"},"modified":"2010-03-17T00:26:06","modified_gmt":"2010-03-17T04:26:06","slug":"review-of-the-guernsey-literary-and-potato-peel-pie-society-by-mary-ann-shaffer-and-annie-barrows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=374","title":{"rendered":"Review of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image381\" height=\"208\" alt=\"guernsey_literary.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/guernsey_literary.jpg\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society<\/em><\/p>\n<p>by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows<\/p>\n<p>The Dial Press (Random House), New York, 2008.\u00a0 278 pages.<\/p>\n<p>Starred Review.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Standouts2010.html\">Sonderbooks Stand-out 2010<\/a>: #1 Fiction<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guernseyliterary.com\/\">http:\/\/www.guernseyliterary.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dialpress.com\/\">http:\/\/www.dialpress.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I heard about <em>The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society <\/em>from library customers, and was completely delighted with it.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the book reminded me of <em>84 Charing Cross Road, <\/em>since it was also a book of letters.\u00a0 These letters, since fictional, had even more variety and spice.<\/p>\n<p>Author Julia Ashton begins a correspondence with the people of the island of Guernsey (in the English Channel) when she receives a letter that begins like this:<\/p>\n<p><em>Dear Miss Ashton,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>My name is Dawsey Adams, and I live on my farm in St. Martin&#8217;s Parish on Guernsey.\u00a0 I know of you because I have an old book that once belonged to you &#8212; the <\/em>Selected Essays of Elia, <em>by an author whose name in real life was Charles Lamb.\u00a0 Your name and address were written inside the front cover.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I will speak plain &#8212; I love Charles Lamb.\u00a0 My own book says <\/em>Selected, <em>so I wondered if that meant he had written other things to choose from?\u00a0 These are the pieces I want to read, and though the Germans are gone now, there aren&#8217;t any bookshops left on Guernsey.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I want to ask a kindness of you.\u00a0 Could you send me the\u00a0name and address of a bookshop in London?\u00a0 I would like to order more of Charles Lamb&#8217;s writings by post.\u00a0 I would also like to ask if anyone has ever written his life story, and if they have, could a copy be found for me?\u00a0 For all his bright and turning mind, I think Mr. Lamb must have had a great sadness in his life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Charles Lamb made me laugh during the German Occupation, especially when he wrote about the roast pig.\u00a0 The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society came into being because of a roast pig we had to keep secret from the German soldiers, so I feel a kinship to Mr. Lamb&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Who could resist answering such a letter?\u00a0 Set shortly after World War II, as Julia inquires more about the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, she learns about their extraordinary lives during the German occupation of the island.\u00a0 Since she was looking for a topic for her next book, she ends up visiting the island and the islanders quickly gain a place in her heart.<\/p>\n<p>They will gain a place in the reader&#8217;s heart, too.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there are some awful stories from the war, but the overall tone of the book is uplifting, heartwarming, and delightful.\u00a0 I thoroughly enjoyed this book.<\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s what I love about reading: one tiny thing will interest you in a book, and that tiny thing will lead you onto another book, and another bit there will lead you onto a third book.
