It&#8217;s been months since I&#8217;ve done it, but tonight it&#8217;s time for <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=184\">Sonderling Sunday<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Sonderlinge3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-36535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Sonderlinge3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Sonderlinge3.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sonderling Sunday is that time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books, sort of a Very Silly Phrasebook for armchair travelers.<\/p>\n<p>Since I&#8217;m skipping so many weeks now, I&#8217;m going back to the Sonderbook that gave me the idea, <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?cat=174\"><em>Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/em><\/a>, with the original English title <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/order_of_odd_fish.html\"><em>The Order of Odd-fish<\/em><\/a>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=37578\">Last time, which I&#8217;m afraid was back in April<\/a>, we left off on page 353 in the English edition, <em>Seite 449 auf Deutsch<\/em>.  For a very long time, Jo and Fiona have been fighting a bitter battle.  (I try not to give away any spoilers, just intrigue you with the language and phrases used, so I won&#8217;t say more than that.)<\/p>\n<p>The way the next section begins hints at the drama:<br \/>\n&#8220;Jo grabbed the bars of the cage, hanging on.  It wasn&#8217;t over until she fell in the water.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie erwischte die Stangen des Gitters und hielt sich fest.  Der Kampf war erst vorbei, wenn sie ins Wasser fiel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>See if you can find a reason to use this sentence this week:<br \/>\n&#8220;But she had lost her ostrich.&#8221;<br \/>\n=<em>Aber sie hatte ihren Stau\u00df verloren.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The translator has often lost alliteration:<br \/>\n&#8220;she was bruised, bloody, and broken&#8221;<br \/>\n=<em>sie war \u00fcbel mitgenommen, blut\u00fcberstr\u00f6mt und am Ende ihrer Kr\u00e4fte<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;she was evilly run-down, blood-overflowing and at the end of her strength&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;gibbered&#8221; = <em>plapperte sinnlos<\/em> (&#8220;babbled senselessly&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a black, sludgy gelatin&#8221; = <em>eine schwarze, schlammige Gelatine<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the universe itself might unravel&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>das Universum selbst m\u00f6glicherweise vernichtet werden w\u00fcrde<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She was still clinging to the side of the cage.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie klammerte sich noch immer an den K\u00e4figst\u00e4ben fest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bestial and ugly, screaming for blood&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>bestialisch, h\u00e4sslich und nach Blut schreiend<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bucked fiercely&#8221; = <em>bockte wild<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;every chance&#8221; = <em>bei jeder sich bietenden Gelegenheit<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;waving her over&#8221; = <em>winkten sie zu sich.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Long word alert:<br \/>\n&#8220;opposite side&#8221; = <em>gegen\u00fcberliegenden Seite<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;stamping, hollering, and pressing their faces against the cage&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>stampften und br\u00fcllten und pressten ihre Gesichter gegen den K\u00e4fig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;encouragement&#8221; = <em>Aufmunterungen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;screamed abuse&#8221; = <em>beschimpften sie<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;extra lance&#8221; = <em>Ersatzlanze<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;blast&#8221; = <em>Knall<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;clogging the doors and hallways&#8221; = <em>verstopften T\u00fcren und G\u00e4nge<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;unheard-of&#8221; = <em>absolut unerh\u00f6rt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;breaking the furniture&#8221; = <em>zertr\u00fcmmerte die M\u00f6bel<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;debris&#8221; = <em>Tr\u00fcmmer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;flung aside&#8221; = <em>beiseitegesto\u00dfen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;squirting out of her eyes&#8221; = <em>spritzte aus ihren Augen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;running out her nose&#8221; = <em>lief aus ihrer Nase<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;gurgling in the back of her throat&#8221; = <em>gurgelte in ihrer Kehle<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;seeping from under her fingernails&#8221; = <em>sickerte unter ihren Fingern\u00e4geln hervor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;in the back of her throat&#8221; = <em>an ihrem Gaumen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;piteously&#8221; = <em>erb\u00e4rmlich<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dark and angry&#8221; = <em>d\u00fcster und w\u00fctend<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;thunderous cheer&#8221; = <em>donnernder Jubel<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the last sentence of Chapter 25:<br \/>\n&#8220;She had betrayed them all.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie hatte sie alle betrogen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Auf wiedersehen!<\/em>  Now until next time, see how many of these phrases you can work into conversation, preparing for the day when we can travel to Germany again!  When that day comes, we&#8217;ll surely hear <em>donnernder Jubel<\/em>.
