We All Play: kim\u00eataw\u00e2naw<\/em> is exactly the kind of book I try to find for Baby Storytime: Just a few words per page, plus images of children and animals on the pages.<\/p>\n

The pictures are animals playing. Here\u2019s the first verse, covering several pages:<\/p>\n

Animals hide
\nand hop [Little rabbits on this spread]<\/p>\n

and sniff
\nand sneak [Little foxes]<\/p>\n

and peek
\nand peep [Little owls]<\/p>\n

We play too!
\nkim\u00eataw\u00e2naw m\u00eena [Now there are children]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s the pattern for three verses, and then in the final verse, the animals go to sleep, and we do, too.<\/p>\n

The language being used is Plains Cree, and there are only a few words in the text, but I like the chart at the back. It\u2019s got all thirteen animals that appear in the book, as well as \u201cchild\u201d and \u201cbaby\u201d and gives the Cree words for One, More than One, and for \u201cYounger, Smaller, Cuter.\u201d There\u2019s also a pronunciation guide at the back, so if I use this in story time, I\u2019ll be able to say the Cree words in the text.<\/p>\n

I love Julie Flett\u2019s art! It\u2019s quiet and calming, with subdued colors, but the children and animals playing do convey joy.<\/p>\n

This book is simple, and it\u2019s playful and lovely, with lots of room for talking with your little one about what they see \u2013 and then playing!<\/p>\n
