{"id":406,"date":"2009-02-28T23:35:02","date_gmt":"2009-03-01T03:35:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/28\/review-of-watchmen-by-alan-moore-and-dave-gibbons\/"},"modified":"2009-02-28T23:37:22","modified_gmt":"2009-03-01T03:37:22","slug":"review-of-watchmen-by-alan-moore-and-dave-gibbons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=406","title":{"rendered":"Review of Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image405\" height=\"208\" alt=\"watchmen.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/watchmen.jpg\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Watchmen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons<\/p>\n<p>DC Comics, 1986.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Winner of the Hugo Award.<\/p>\n<p>Starred review.<\/p>\n<p>I finally read <em>Watchmen<\/em> this week, since I definitely have to take my teenage son to see the movie the day it comes out.\u00a0 <em>Watchmen <\/em>is acclaimed by many as the greatest graphic novel of all time, and I can see why.\u00a0 This book has layers upon layers upon layers of meaning.\u00a0 You definitely only scratch the surface of all that&#8217;s going on the first time you read it.<\/p>\n<p>Set in an alternate 1985, the story begins with the death of costumed hero The Comedian.\u00a0 Rorschach, another masked hero, thinks there may be a plot against masked vigilantes.\u00a0 Someone with great power must be behind it, because who else could have thrown The Comedian out a window?<\/p>\n<p>My son is rereading the book in the <em>Absolute Watchmen <\/em>edition.\u00a0 The pages and pictures are larger, so it&#8217;s easier to see the many important details all lurking in the pages before you even notice them.\u00a0 As I was writing this, my son noticed another one &#8212; that Rorschach didn&#8217;t have the distinctive speech bubbles until he really &#8220;became&#8221; Rorschach.\u00a0 (I hadn&#8217;t noticed that he even had distinctive speech bubbles.)\u00a0 There are thousands of details planted like that.\u00a0 This is a graphic novel where you would still notice new details on the twentieth reading that fit perfectly and provide clues to what&#8217;s really going on.<\/p>\n<p>This book is a mystery, a social commentary, a science fiction adventure, an alternate history, and so much more.\u00a0 Mind you, it is a dark story, with lots of sex and violence.\u00a0 If you wouldn&#8217;t be comfortable watching an R rated movie, then you won&#8217;t want to read this book.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I thought I just enjoyed it as a work of art.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no question that the book is superbly executed, thought-provoking, and interesting.\u00a0 However, on reflection, now that I&#8217;ve finished it, I find\u00a0I really did care\u00a0about the characters.\u00a0 They grew on me.\u00a0 I did like them, and they seem like real people, with real concerns and complexities.\u00a0 For example, I found myself annoyed right along with Laurie when Jon starts talking about what&#8217;s going to happen in a few minutes.\u00a0 Each character is distinctive, with their own hang-ups and desires, and the authors portray that skillfully, and make you care.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely worth the hype.\u00a0 I&#8217;m looking forward to seeing the movie.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll come back to the book some day, and try to pick up a few hundred more details that I missed the first time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0930289234\/sonderbooksco-20\" target=\"outside\">Buy from Amazon.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons DC Comics, 1986.\u00a0 Winner of the Hugo Award.
