\"\"<\/a>It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! The time to be nerdy and play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books – sort of a silly phrasebook for unserious travelers.<\/p>\n

And this time – I actually have a trip booked to go back to Germany for my 60th birthday, happening in a month and a half! So all the more reason to revive these posts! Want to get the tune of German in my head again.<\/p>\n

This week, I’m going back to one of my favorite novels of all time, Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by Shannon Hale, in German Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

[And hey, Book of a Thousand Days<\/em> is one of the best young adult fantasy novels ever written – I mean that completely – and if you’re local to me and have a Fairfax County Public Library card, we just purchased a simultaneous use eaudiobook license for a year to the audiobook on Libby (along with many other backlist titles). This is a full cast production and is amazing<\/a>. Check it out!]<\/p>\n

What I do with Sonderling Sunday is look at sections of the book with interesting German translations. I try not to give away the plot, but do try to pique your curiosity.<\/p>\n

Last time we looked at this book<\/a>, we finished Part One, with the two of them trapped in a tower for not quite a thousand days. We are now on “Part 2 The Adventure Thereafter” = Zweiter Teil Das nachfolgende Abenteuer<\/em><\/p>\n

“I decided to start numbering the days at one again to mark the time when we began anew.”
\n= Ich beschloss, mit der Nummerierung der Tage wieder bei Eins anzufangen um den Neubeginn deutlich zu machen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Who can sleep when there’s real air to breathe?”
\n= Wer kann schon schlafen, wenn es richtige Luft zum Atmen gibt?<\/em><\/p>\n

“the news” = der Neuigkeit<\/em><\/p>\n

“relieved” = erleichtert<\/em><\/p>\n

“waffled” = schwankte<\/em><\/p>\n

“tetchy” = ungeduldig<\/em> (“impatient”)<\/p>\n

“a sulky sheep” = ein unwilliges Schaf<\/em> (“an unwilling sheep”)<\/p>\n

“It was nearly dawn.” = Die D\u00e4mmerung nahte.<\/em><\/p>\n

“My lady kept her eyes squeezed shut.”
\n= Meine Herrin kniff die Augen zu.<\/em><\/p>\n

I like that schlepped is really a German word:
\n“I dragged her inside.”
\n= Ich schleppte sie wieder in den Turm.<\/em><\/p>\n

“hoarse” = heiser<\/em><\/p>\n

Love those long words:
\n“grain husks” = Getreideh\u00fclsen<\/em><\/p>\n

“tossed” = beiseitewerfen<\/em> (“beside-threw”)<\/p>\n

“brushes and ink” = Pinsel und Tinte<\/em><\/p>\n

“moan” = jammern<\/em><\/p>\n

“shadow world” = Schattenwelt<\/em><\/p>\n

“I draped a blanket over her head”
\n= Ich legte ihr ein Tuch auf den Kopf<\/em><\/p>\n

“stumbled” = taumelte<\/em><\/p>\n

“strange” = sonderbar<\/em> (I did mention it’s not always a nice meaning of “special”?)<\/p>\n

“whispers” = Gefl\u00fcster<\/em><\/p>\n

“her brain awry in her head and her understanding tilted steep
\n= ihr Hirn liegt schief im Kopf und ihr Witz ist hinten r\u00fcbergekippt<\/em>
\n(“her brain is crooked in her head and her wit is backwards”)<\/p>\n

“a gray smudge” = eine grau verwischte Linie<\/em>
\n(“a gray blurred line”)<\/p>\n

A word for this in German:
\n“the trees that line the road” = der B\u00e4ume am Stra\u00dfenrand<\/em><\/p>\n

“crept” = schlich<\/em><\/p>\n

“As I climbed atop the heaping rubble”
\n= Als ich den Ger\u00f6llberg erklomm<\/em><\/p>\n

“teemed” = gewimmelt<\/em><\/p>\n

Last sentence from Day 5:
\n“She is not well.”
\n= Es geht ihr schlecht.<\/em><\/p>\n
