\"\"<\/a>It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>, that time of the week when I play with language by looking at silly phrases in the German translations of children’s books.<\/p>\n

Tonight I’m back to the book that started it all, Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>, otherwise known as The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Last time we looked at this book<\/a>, we left off on page 363 in the English edition, Seite 460<\/em> in the German edition, with the words, Wir sind hier, um eine Verhaftung vorzunehmen!<\/em> So the beginning words for the new section won’t come as a surprise:<\/p>\n

“Everyone saw the policemen.”
\n= Alle blickten auf die Polizisten<\/em><\/p>\n

“why rain on her parade now?”
\n= Warum sollten wir ihr deshalb ihr Fest vermiesen?<\/em>
\n(“Why should we for her because of this her party spoil?”)<\/p>\n

“growled” = knurrend<\/em><\/p>\n

“But tonight she will be exposed!”
\n= Heute Nacht werden wir ihr allerdings die Maske vom Gesicht rei\u00dfen!<\/em>
\n(Google translate: “Tonight, however, we’re going to rip the mask off her face!”)<\/p>\n

This is good in German:
\n“echoing all around the cavern”
\n= durch die H\u00f6hle hallte<\/em>
\n(“through the cave echoed”)<\/p>\n

“rage” = Wut<\/em><\/p>\n

“heartbeat” = Herzschl\u00e4ge<\/em><\/p>\n

“staggered” = taumelte<\/em><\/p>\n

“to restore” = wiederherzustellen<\/em> (“again-there-to-place”)<\/p>\n

“crowd’s roar” = Get\u00f6se<\/em> (“din”)<\/p>\n

We’ll end with this sentence on page 366, Seite 464<\/em>:
\n“The Silent Sisters were waiting for her.”
\n= Wo die Stummen Schwestern bereits auf sie warteten.<\/em>
\n(“Where the Silent Sisters already on her waited.”)<\/p>\n
