Tonight, we’re back to Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderling<\/a><\/em>, The Order of Odd-Fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>. We’re still so close to the end – and yet so far! Let’s get a little bit closer.<\/p>\n

Last time we looked at this book, we left off on page 366, Seite 464<\/em> in German (Yes, German is longer.) with the approach of the Silent Sisters, die Stummen Schwestern<\/em>. Here’s the first sentence of the next section:<\/p>\n

“They glowed in the darkness, veils and gowns rippling in an invisible wind, holding out their clutching bony hands.”

Hmm. Not at all sure about this translation:
\n“sedan” = Limousine<\/em> (Though yes, Google confirms that “sedan” is a legit translation.)<\/p>\n

“skidded” = schleuderte<\/em><\/p>\n

Another version of this one:
\n“mob” = Menschenmenge<\/em> (“crowd”)<\/p>\n

“the door flew open” = die Beifahrert\u00fcr flog auf<\/em> (“the by-driver [passenger] door flew open”)<\/p>\n

“bricks and rocks” = Ziegelsteine und Felsbrocken<\/em> (“brick-stones and rock-chunks”)<\/p>\n

“Audrey floored it.” = Audrey gab Vollgas.<\/em><\/p>\n

“I slipped away.” = Ich bin schnell hinausgeschl\u00fcpft<\/em><\/p>\n

“after this blows over”
\n= wenn Gras \u00fcber diese Sache gewachsen ist<\/em>
\n(“when grass grows over these things”)<\/p>\n

“deserted and in shambles” = verlassen and verw\u00fcstet<\/em><\/p>\n

“wedged into the twisted door frame”
\n= in dem verbogenen Rahmen klemmte<\/em><\/p>\n

“shattered” = zerschmettert<\/em><\/p>\n

“a panel in the wall” = eine Holzvert\u00e4felung an der Wand<\/em><\/p>\n

“hidden door” = Geheimt\u00fcr<\/em><\/p>\n

“narrow” = schmaler<\/em><\/p>\n

“poking around” = herumgeschn\u00fcffelt<\/em> (“sniffing around” — I like this word!)<\/p>\n

“crawl space” = Kriechraum<\/em><\/p>\n

“Don’t ask!” = Stell keine Fragen!<\/em><\/p>\n

“reluctantly” = z\u00f6gernd<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, here’s a phrase every traveler should know:
\n“sucking up her blood” = ihr Blut aufsaugte<\/em><\/p>\n

And a sad last sentence for the section:
\n“Maybe she was born evil.”
\n= Vieleicht war sie von Geburt an b\u00f6se.<\/em><\/p>\n

That’s it for tonight! We’re leaving off on Seite 468<\/em>, page 370, at a section break. Only two chapters and a small section to go!<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I hope you will never need most of the above phrases in your travels, but isn’t it good to be prepared? And one that I may use on the Autobahn is giving the car Vollgas<\/em>.<\/p>\n
