\"\"<\/a>Guten Abend!<\/em> It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when we find silly phrases translated into German from the texts of children’s books.<\/p>\n

Tonight, I”m back to The Order of Odd-fish<\/a><\/em>, by James Kennedy<\/a>, with the German text Der Orden der Seltsamen Sonderlinge<\/a>.<\/em>. Last time, we had almost finished the twenty-sixth chapter (out of twenty-eight).<\/p>\n

So tonight we start on page 370 in the English edition, Seite 469 auf Deutsch.<\/em> We’re getting near the dramatic climax of the book, so I’ll try to only give teasers, not spoilers. The first sentence of the next section is:<\/p>\n

“An hour later Audrey came back.”
\n[Side note: Yay! I’ve been doing Pimsleur German CDs in preparation for my trip, and I translated that sentence correctly!]
\n= Eine Stunde sp\u00e4ter kam Audren zur\u00fcck.<\/em><\/p>\n

I like the rhyme here:
\n“It’s getting worse out there.”
\n=Hier drau\u00dfen wird es immer schlimmer.<\/em>
\n(“Here outside becomes it always worse.”)<\/p>\n

“escaped from the asylum”
\n= ist aus der Irrenanstalt ausgebrochen.<\/em><\/p>\n

“lose their mind”
\n= verliert entweder den Verstand<\/em><\/p>\n

“faint”
\n= wird ohnm\u00e4chtig<\/em>

“top of the mountain”

Long words are always fun:

“incense”

\n[“Consecration-smoke”]<\/p>\n

Nice and dramatic in English, a bit more explanation in German, here’s the last sentence of the chapter:
\n“They had her.”
\n= Jetzt hatten die Stummen Schwestern sie.”<\/p>\n

That’s it for tonight! And next week is the eve of my trip to Germany, so whether I do a post depends on how I’m feeling about the state of my packing! I will see how many of these phrases I can use on my trip, but I hope it will be more along the lines of <\/em>juwelengeschm\u00fcckter \u00dcberw\u00fcrfe<\/em> and Berggipfel<\/em> than einen Fluchtplan f\u00fcr dich<\/em> and Dein Plan funktioniert nicht.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
