The time to be nerdy and play with language by looking at the German translation of children\u2019s books \u2013 sort of a silly phrasebook for unserious travelers.<\/p>\n<p>Today we&#8217;re looking at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?tag=das-buch-der-tausend-tage\">Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/a><\/em>, the translation of one of my very favorite books, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/shannon_hale_books.html\">Shannon Hale<\/a>&#8216;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Teens\/book_of_a_thousand_days.html\">Book of a Thousand Days<\/a>.<\/em>  The German edition is translated by Anne Brauner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=43639\">Last time we used this book<\/a>, we left off on Day 6 of &#8220;The Adventure Thereafter,&#8221; which is page 118 in English and <em>Seite 130 auf Deutsch.<\/em>  Here&#8217;s the first sentence of the new section:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is her khan&#8217;s land burned down as well?&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Wurde das Land ihres Khans auch niedergewalzt?<\/em><br \/>\n[I looked up <em>walz<\/em> on Google Translate, and it means &#8220;rolling&#8221;.  <em>Niedergewalzt<\/em> is literally &#8220;down-rolled.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;drift from tree shade to tree shade&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>von Baumschatten zu Baumschatten treiben<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;swallows people whole&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>die Menschen verschluckt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;queasy&#8221; = <em>mulmig<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;whispers&#8221; = <em>Gefl\u00fcster<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;vessels to carry water&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Gef\u00e4\u00dfe, in denen wir Wasser aufbewahren k\u00f6nnen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;pillagers&#8221; = <em>Pl\u00fcnderern<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;stubborn mare&#8221; = <em>st\u00f6rrische Stute<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;must dangle my own carrot&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>muss meinen eigenen K\u00f6der baumeln lassen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;scratched-out letters&#8221; = <em>ausgekratzten Buchstaben<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;many a body&#8221; = <em>so manche Leiche<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;burned bones&#8221; = <em>verkohlte Knochen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;missing skulls&#8221; = <em>fehlende Sch\u00e4del<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dread&#8221; = <em>Best\u00fcrzung<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both are different shades of darkness.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Beide ist Dunkelheit, in unterschiedlichen Schattierungen.<\/em> (This is why German is longer.)<br \/>\n[&#8220;Both are darkness, in different shades.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While I sorted through the rubble&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Als wir in dem Ger\u00f6ll stocherten<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;heap of rubble&#8221; = <em>Schutthaufen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;barley meal&#8221; = <em>Gerstenmehl<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;some rope&#8221; = <em>Tauwerk<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;ceramic pot&#8221; = <em>Keramiktopf<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;spout&#8221; = <em>T\u00fclle<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;sharpen sticks&#8221; = <em>St\u00f6cke anspitzen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;rodents&#8221; = <em>Nagetiere<\/em> [&#8220;gnaw-animals&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;spear&#8221; = <em>aufspie\u00dfen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bubbles up&#8221; = <em>lossprudelt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;herd of horses&#8221; = <em>Pferdeherde<\/em> (It rhymes!)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;nuzzles&#8221; = <em>schnuppert<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;spiced food&#8221; = <em>gew\u00fcrztes Essen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Stars light my page.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Die Sterne beleuchten diese Seite.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;setting sun&#8221; = <em>untergehenden Sonne<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No walls trap us now!&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Mauern mehr in die Falle locken!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;smell of grass and yak&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Duft von Gras und Yak<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the last sentence of the day:<br \/>\n&#8220;The Ancestors will honor such a life as mine, I hope.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Ich hoffe, dass die Ahnen ein Leben wie meines ehren werden.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the last sentence of <em>Tag 8<\/em>, but our narrator doesn&#8217;t take up her pen again until <em>Tag 33<\/em>.
