That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children&#8217;s books.<\/p>\n<p>I learned that tomorrow I&#8217;ve got a Snow Day, so never mind things I want to get done on Sunday night!  I have time to have some fun!  Let&#8217;s look at some silly German phrases that I dare you to find a way to use!<\/p>\n<p>Tonight I&#8217;m going with the German book I bought last summer on my first trip back to Germany in 18 years, <em>Lockwood &#038; Co.: Die Seufzende Wendeltreppe<\/em>, which is the translation of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Childrens_Fiction\/screaming_staircase.html\">Lockwood &#038; Co.: The Screaming Staircase<\/a><\/em>.  <a href=\"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/blog\/?p=44161\">Last time we covered this book, we finished up Chapter One<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So we begin tonight with Chapter Two, which is page 13 in the English edition, <em>Seite 22 auf Deutsch.<\/em>  It&#8217;s always fun to start with the first sentence:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you go out hunting wicked spirits, it&#8217;s the simple things that matter most.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Bei der Jagd nach Geistern kommt es oft auf die einfachen Dinge an:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the silvered point of your rapier flashing in the dark&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>die versilberte Degenspitze, die im Dunkeln aufblitzt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the iron filings scattered on the floor&#8221;<br \/>\n=<em>die Eisensp\u00e4ne auf dem Fu\u00dfboden<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the sealed canisters of best Greek Fire, ready as a last resort&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>die versiegelten B\u00fcchsen mit Griechischem Feuer f\u00fcr den \u00e4u\u00dfersten Notfall<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;iron circle&#8221; = <em>Schutzkreis<\/em> (&#8220;protection-circle&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They help to keep you sane&#8221; = <em>dass man bei Verstand bleibt<\/em> (&#8220;that one sane stays&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;in a haunted house&#8221; = <em>in einem Heimgesuchten Haus<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the silence beats against your ears&#8221; = <em>die Stille rauscht in den Ohren<\/em> (&#8220;the silence rushes in the ears&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In short, you need distractions.&#8221; = <em>Soll hei\u00dfen: Man braucht eine Ablenkung.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lockwood reads the gossip magazines.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Lockwood schm\u00f6kert in Glamourzeitschriften.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;Lockwood browses through glamour-magazines.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;bumping on the stairs&#8221; = <em>Poltern auf der Treppe<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[Ha!  That must be where &#8220;Poltergeist&#8221; comes from!  &#8220;Bumping-ghost&#8221;!]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our belts have seven separate clips and pouches&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Unsere G\u00fcrtel haben sieben verschiedene T\u00e4schchen und Karabinerhaken<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We went through these in silence&#8221; = <em>wir \u00fcberpr\u00fcften wortlos<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Okay, long word alert!<br \/>\n&#8220;systematically checking the contents&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>systematisch s\u00e4mtliche Ausr\u00fcstungsgegenst\u00e4nde, die daran befestigt waren<\/em><br \/>\n(Something like: &#8220;systematically all the equipment-objects, that to it attached were&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;the kettle wheezed and huffed away&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Der Wasserkessel schnaufte und zischte leise vor sich hin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;hedges&#8221; = <\/em><em>Lorbeerhecke<\/em> (&#8220;laurel hedges&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;aural&#8221; = <em>akustischen<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Interesting switch of language:<br \/>\n&#8220;She might as well have written it in Greek for all the good it does us.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Sie h\u00e4tte den Bogen genauso gut auf Lateinisch ausf\u00fcllen k\u00f6nnen.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;She could just as well have filled out the form in Latin.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hadn&#8217;t been sleeping well.&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Er hatte Schlafst\u00f6rungen.<\/em><br \/>\n(&#8220;He had Sleep-disorders.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;twinkly-eyed&#8221; = <em>Lachf\u00e4ltchen<\/em> (&#8220;laugh-lines&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;vengeance&#8221; = <em>Rache<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a moving shape&#8221; = <em>eine schwebende Gestalt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I quote&#8221; = <em>Ich zitiere<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Word for word&#8221; = <em>wortw\u00f6rtlich<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;dunked&#8221; = <em>tunkte<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the last sentence of this section (page 18, <em>Seite 27<\/em>):<br \/>\n&#8220;I drained my mug, set it carefully on the table.  &#8216;I think that&#8217;s a very good idea.'&#8221;<br \/>\n= <em>Ich trank meinen Tee aus und stellte den Becher behutsam auf den Tisch.  \u00bbGute Idee.\u00ab<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s it for tonight.  Now you have handy phrases to use if you should ever encounter a <em>Heimgesuchten Haus<\/em> in Germany!
