It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! That time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books.<\/p>\n

I learned that tomorrow I’ve got a Snow Day, so never mind things I want to get done on Sunday night! I have time to have some fun! Let’s look at some silly German phrases that I dare you to find a way to use!<\/p>\n

Tonight I’m going with the German book I bought last summer on my first trip back to Germany in 18 years, Lockwood & Co.: Die Seufzende Wendeltreppe<\/em>, which is the translation of Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase<\/a><\/em>. Last time we covered this book, we finished up Chapter One<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So we begin tonight with Chapter Two, which is page 13 in the English edition, Seite 22 auf Deutsch.<\/em> It’s always fun to start with the first sentence:<\/p>\n

“When you go out hunting wicked spirits, it’s the simple things that matter most.”
\n= Bei der Jagd nach Geistern kommt es oft auf die einfachen Dinge an:<\/em><\/p>\n

“the silvered point of your rapier flashing in the dark”
\n= die versilberte Degenspitze, die im Dunkeln aufblitzt<\/em><\/p>\n

“the iron filings scattered on the floor”

“They help to keep you sane” = dass man bei Verstand bleibt<\/em> (“that one sane stays”)<\/p>\n

“in a haunted house” = in einem Heimgesuchten Haus<\/em><\/p>\n

“the silence beats against your ears” = die Stille rauscht in den Ohren<\/em> (“the silence rushes in the ears”)<\/p>\n

“In short, you need distractions.” = Soll hei\u00dfen: Man braucht eine Ablenkung.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Lockwood reads the gossip magazines.”
\n= Lockwood schm\u00f6kert in Glamourzeitschriften.<\/em>
\n(“Lockwood browses through glamour-magazines.”)<\/p>\n

“bumping on the stairs” = Poltern auf der Treppe<\/em><\/p>\n

[Ha! That must be where “Poltergeist” comes from! “Bumping-ghost”!]<\/p>\n

“Our belts have seven separate clips and pouches”
\n= Unsere G\u00fcrtel haben sieben verschiedene T\u00e4schchen und Karabinerhaken<\/em><\/p>\n

“We went through these in silence” = wir \u00fcberpr\u00fcften wortlos<\/em><\/p>\n

Okay, long word alert!
\n“systematically checking the contents”
\n= systematisch s\u00e4mtliche Ausr\u00fcstungsgegenst\u00e4nde, die daran befestigt waren<\/em>
\n(Something like: “systematically all the equipment-objects, that to it attached were”)<\/p>\n

“the kettle wheezed and huffed away”
\n= Der Wasserkessel schnaufte und zischte leise vor sich hin.”<\/p>\n

“hedges” = <\/em>Lorbeerhecke<\/em> (“laurel hedges”)<\/p>\n

“aural” = akustischen<\/em><\/p>\n

Interesting switch of language:
\n“She might as well have written it in Greek for all the good it does us.”
\n= Sie h\u00e4tte den Bogen genauso gut auf Lateinisch ausf\u00fcllen k\u00f6nnen.<\/em>
\n(“She could just as well have filled out the form in Latin.”)<\/p>\n

“Hadn’t been sleeping well.”
\n= Er hatte Schlafst\u00f6rungen.<\/em>
\n(“He had Sleep-disorders.”)<\/p>\n

“twinkly-eyed” = Lachf\u00e4ltchen<\/em> (“laugh-lines”)<\/p>\n

“vengeance” = Rache<\/em><\/p>\n

“a moving shape” = eine schwebende Gestalt<\/em><\/p>\n

“I quote” = Ich zitiere<\/em><\/p>\n

“Word for word” = wortw\u00f6rtlich<\/em><\/p>\n

“dunked” = tunkte<\/em><\/p>\n

And the last sentence of this section (page 18, Seite 27<\/em>):
\n“I drained my mug, set it carefully on the table. ‘I think that’s a very good idea.'”
\n= Ich trank meinen Tee aus und stellte den Becher behutsam auf den Tisch. \u00bbGute Idee.\u00ab<\/em><\/p>\n

And that’s it for tonight. Now you have handy phrases to use if you should ever encounter a Heimgesuchten Haus<\/em> in Germany! And I like the word schm\u00f6kert<\/em> for browsing through gossip magazines.<\/p>\n
