It’s time for Sonderling Sunday<\/a>! It’s the time of the week when I play with language by looking at the German translation of children’s books. Tonight’s edition is brought to you by snow outside – snow that kept me home from my Sunday gaming group today.<\/p>\n

And I’m in the mood to go back to Das Buch der Tausend Tage<\/em>, Book of a Thousand Days<\/a><\/em>, by Shannon Hale. Maybe because I’m celebrating #Sonderbooks25<\/a>, my 25th year of posting Sonderbooks, and I’m getting sort of close to 2007, the year Book of a Thousand Days<\/em> was my favorite book read.<\/p>\n

Whatever the reason, it’s been a long time since we looked at this book, but last time<\/a> we left off with Day 8 after our two main characters got out of the tower where they’d been imprisoned.<\/p>\n

So let’s begin with the next chapter, Day 33, Tag 33<\/em>:<\/p>\n

“Three weeks we’ve been walking and still not another soul.”
\n= Wir sind jetzt drei Wochen unterwegs und immer noch niemandem begegnet.<\/em><\/p>\n

“remains of some villages” = \u00dcberbleibsel einiger D\u00f6rfer<\/em><\/p>\n

Here’s a phrase that might come in handy:
\n“throwing wash water out the window”

The German’s been more alliterative:
\n“fighting and kissing” = k\u00e4mpften und k\u00fcssten<\/em><\/p>\n

“wasp’s nest” = Wespennest<\/em><\/p>\n

“the laces on my boot” = meinen Schn\u00fcrsenkeln<\/em><\/p>\n

“calluses” = Schwielen<\/em><\/p>\n

“squinted” = aus zusammengekniffenen Augen an<\/em><\/p>\n

“washing hearth” = Sp\u00fclfeuerstelle<\/em><\/p>\n

And finally, a sentence I can definitely use:
\n“I’ll pay for this writing time tomorrow.”
\n= Morgen werde ich f\u00fcr diese Geschreibsel b\u00fc\u00dfen.<\/em><\/p>\n
