{"id":49,"date":"2007-09-06T10:30:51","date_gmt":"2007-09-06T14:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderjourneys\/2007\/09\/06\/childrens-writers\/"},"modified":"2007-09-06T10:30:51","modified_gmt":"2007-09-06T14:30:51","slug":"childrens-writers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderjourneys\/?p=49","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s Writers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve decided that people who write for children and young adults are an extremely intelligent bunch.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m reading my new issue of <em>The Horn Book Magazine, <\/em>and this month it&#8217;s got many short essays by children&#8217;s writers on gender issues.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m struck afresh by how brilliant these people are.<\/p>\n<p>There was an interview with Jon Scieszka.\u00c2\u00a0 The man is wonderfully funny, and his books are full of boyish pranks (no surprise to learn he&#8217;s from a family of all boys).\u00c2\u00a0 But how amazingly insightful he is as well.\u00c2\u00a0 Part of why I love reading <em>Horn Book Magazine <\/em>is that big issues are dealt with in a thought-provoking, powerful way.<\/p>\n<p>Then I realize it&#8217;s not the first time I&#8217;ve heard wisdom from children&#8217;s writers.\u00c2\u00a0 Susan Patron&#8217;s Newbery Acceptance Speech.\u00c2\u00a0 David Wiesner&#8217;s Caldecott Acceptance Speech.\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, every single author I heard speak at ALA&#8211;and for the Printz Awards, even the Honor winners had to speak.\u00c2\u00a0 Then there&#8217;s John and Hank Green&#8217;s Brotherhood 2.0 site&#8211;full of tremendously clever, tremendously funny, nerdy humor.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I shouldn&#8217;t be surprised that people who can express profound truths through fiction also turn out to be deep thinkers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve decided that people who write for children and young adults are an extremely intelligent bunch.
