{"id":97,"date":"2008-03-18T22:41:14","date_gmt":"2008-03-19T02:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderjourneys\/2008\/03\/18\/joy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T22:50:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T02:50:05","slug":"joy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderjourneys\/?p=97","title":{"rendered":"Joy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I finished reading <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/Childrens_Fiction\/before_green_gables.html\">Before Green Gables<\/a>, <\/em>by Budge Wilson, a prequel to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonderbooks.com\/ChildrensFiction\/anneofgreengables.html\">Anne of Green Gables<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0 I thought it would be depressing &#8212; Anne&#8217;s childhood was hard &#8212; but it showed how Anne found transcendent moments, even as a child, even with a hard life.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the Proverb, &#8220;Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to be like Anne &#8212; thoroughly enjoying things worth enjoying, without apology.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about my many travels with Steve.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve been all over the world.\u00a0 From the start, I &#8220;collected&#8221; castles, and just loved to roam over castles and take pictures.<\/p>\n<p>I think a lot of the time, especially in the beginning, Steve thoroughly enjoyed the trips with me.<\/p>\n<p>But toward the end, especially after he had already decided the marriage was over, he went through the motions, but his heart wasn&#8217;t in it at all.\u00a0 (You can actually see this in the pictures over the years.)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to take joy in something when someone you love is there in body, but not at all entering into the experience.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s wonderful to share a transcendent experience with someone.\u00a0 My last trip to Paris with the Sisters of Royaumont was a glorious example.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s also freeing to not have to worry about being with people who aren&#8217;t having a good time.\u00a0 To just have responsibility for yourself, and be able to thoroughly enjoy something.\u00a0 A painting of a forest in France.\u00a0 A blooming branch.\u00a0 A field of daffodils.\u00a0 A twisted tree limb.\u00a0 A brisk breeze.<\/p>\n<p>My life has many joyful moments.\u00a0 One nice thing about living as a single person is the chance to thoroughly enjoy God&#8217;s blessings, without apology.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it was yet more wonderful when my husband was enjoying life with me, for example, treasuring our arrival in Europe.\u00a0 But now I don&#8217;t have to feel bad if he is not sharing my joy.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sorry for it.\u00a0 I still pray for him daily &#8212; particularly that he will find Joy and know God&#8217;s great love &#8212; but how do I express this freeing sensation?\u00a0 I am realizing that I am not responsible, in any way whatsoever, for his happiness or his choices.<\/p>\n<p>And I am free to choose Joy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I finished reading Before Green Gables, by Budge Wilson, a prequel to Anne of Green Gables.\u00a0 I thought it would be depressing &#8212; Anne&#8217;s childhood was hard &#8212; but it showed how Anne found transcendent moments, even as a child, even with a hard life.
