{"id":98,"date":"2008-03-27T21:28:42","date_gmt":"2008-03-28T01:28:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderjourneys\/2008\/03\/27\/librarianship-as-a-calling\/"},"modified":"2008-03-28T23:40:30","modified_gmt":"2008-03-29T03:40:30","slug":"librarianship-as-a-calling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderjourneys\/?p=98","title":{"rendered":"Librarianship as a Calling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having finished <em>Our Singular Strengths:\u00c2\u00a0 Meditations for Librarians, <\/em>by Michael Gorman, today I&#8217;ve begun reading <em>Our Own Selves:\u00c2\u00a0 More Meditations for Librarians, <\/em>by the same author.<\/p>\n<p>In the first meditation, he quotes from a book written in 1966 by Lawrence Clark Powell.\u00c2\u00a0 Gorman says:<\/p>\n<p><em>In it, he summons up a vision of a library as a place formed by &#8220;good hands&#8221; that have made it orderly and efficient; by &#8220;good heads&#8221; that have not only shaped collections by intelligent choice but have also absorbed a good part of the knowledge contained in those collections; and &#8220;good hearts&#8221; that exercise service in humility &#8212; motivated by a love of people and learning&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Libraries are about service or they are about nothing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That got me thinking about why I&#8217;m excited about being a librarian.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I had several opportunities to help people find information, quite a few of which were Moms with kids.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s one thing I thoroughly enjoy doing.<\/p>\n<p>I love books.\u00c2\u00a0 I love learning.\u00c2\u00a0 I love connecting people and books.\u00c2\u00a0 And I like helping people.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why becoming a librarian isn&#8217;t just about finding a job to support myself.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s about finding a calling.<\/p>\n<p>May I remember that!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having finished Our Singular Strengths:\u00c2\u00a0 Meditations for Librarians, by Michael Gorman, today I&#8217;ve begun reading Our Own Selves:\u00c2\u00a0 More Meditations for Librarians, by the same author.
