{"id":359,"date":"2008-02-07T11:42:39","date_gmt":"2008-02-07T15:42:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderquotes\/2008\/02\/07\/god-is-not-mean\/"},"modified":"2008-02-07T11:44:10","modified_gmt":"2008-02-07T15:44:10","slug":"god-is-not-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonderbooks.com\/sonderquotes\/?p=359","title":{"rendered":"God Is Not Mean."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, though, I choose to worship a God whose justice is beyond my understanding in all particulars but this one that my children have taught me:\u00c2\u00a0 God is not mean.<\/p>\n<p>God gave me a husband who loves me and children who are not horribly sick and a job I like and a mother-in-law who passes on her cars to us for their bluebook prices and, two Sundays ago, eight newborn Labrador puppies who are just now opening their eyes&#8230;.\u00c2\u00a0 God hears my prayers and answers them in my best interest, every one of them, although I sometimes don&#8217;t recognize that he has or agree with him about what my best interest might be&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>God is not mean.\u00c2\u00a0 He chose me, despite my own frequent meanness.\u00c2\u00a0 He chose me when there were better people.\u00c2\u00a0 Better mothers.\u00c2\u00a0 Better writers.\u00c2\u00a0 Better Christians.\u00c2\u00a0 Better cooks, probably.\u00c2\u00a0 There are so many others that he could have chosen, others that I hope he will choose, every one of them.\u00c2\u00a0 And after he chose me he has kept on choosing me:\u00c2\u00a0 rewarding me, reassuring me, burying me in blessings.<\/p>\n<p>Our God, I have learned from my daughters, is the God of promises &#8212; promises of healing and happiness and all good things &#8212; for those who look forward to their own fulfillment.\u00c2\u00a0 Promises available not only in the Word of God but in all creation, in newborn puppies with their eyes still closed and ditches and frothed milk and silly games.\u00c2\u00a0 In children.\u00c2\u00a0 In our ability to imagine heaven.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Patty Kirk, <em>Confessions of an Amateur Believer,<\/em> p. 229-232<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, though, I choose to worship a God whose justice is beyond my understanding in all particulars but this one that my children have taught me:\u00c2\u00a0 God is not mean.
