edited by Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly

Reviewed October 2, 2003.

My 9-year-old son thought this book was excellent.  I found it fun and silly, but not terribly memorable.  This is in the nonfiction art section because it’s a collection of comics.  They are done by children’s authors and artists and comic artists.  They were all asked to start with the words “It was a dark and silly night.”  Not surprisingly, the results are quite silly.

This is a large-format book and the art is very beautiful and rich in color and variety and fun to browse through.  The stories vary considerably.  I like Lemony Snicket’s story that starts off the book.  A few are only one-page puzzles.  Kids who are comic book fans will especially enjoy it.
