***The Wonders of Donal O'Donnell

by Gary Schmidt

illustrated by Loren Long

Reviewed June 30, 2003.
Henry Holt and Company, New York, 2002.  40 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (J 398.209 SCH).

Gary Schmidt weaves together four Irish folktales about lost boys and the fairy folk.  Three stories told by peddlers serve to comfort the heart of Donal O’Donnell, who had closed his heart after his boyo’s death.  He learns from the peddlers stories that stories can unbar and unbolt a heart.

These are good tales, with pictures that evoke beautiful Ireland.
