***Escape from Earth

by Peter Ackroyd

Reviewed August 3, 2004.
DK Publishing, New York, 2004.  144 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (J MCN 919.904 ACK).

This stunningly photographed book traces the history of man’s exploration of space.  Each two-page spread uses a photograph as a background, telling the story clearly and concisely, with numerous additional pictures and sidebars.

The book begins with the design of a rocket in 1903 and further study during World War I.  It traces the space race between the Soviets and the Americans and gives details about each mission.

The story continues with satellites and space stations, space shuttles and interplanetary probes.  This book would be great for reports, but it also makes fascinating reading about all that we have done in space, and what the future might hold.
