****Wren's Questby Sherwood Smith Reviewed August 3, 2004.
Firebird (Penguin), New York, 2004. Originally published in 1993. 199 pages. Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #3, Children's Fantasy This is the third book I’ve read by Sherwood Smith, and already I’m thinking of her as one of my favorite authors. Wren’s Quest continues the adventures of Wren and her three friends. In this second book, she sets off to find her family. She grew up in an orphanage, but she’s going to check the records of the guards who brought her in. Prince Connor comes along to help and protect her, and begins to ask some questions about his own identity. Meanwhile, at the palace things are going wrong, and Wren and Connor seem to have been followed. Princess Teressa and the apprentice magician Tyron have an idea for getting to the heart of the matter, but that doesn’t end up being simple, either. The character of Wren makes this series delightful. She’s got spunk, friendliness, and a touch of magic. She’s confident and creative in dealing with villains, but a faithful and true friend. Joining Wren’s world again is a treat. I was sorry there was only one book left, until I looked at Sherwood Smith’s website and learned that she’s working on a fourth. Hooray!
