***See the CityThe Journey of Manhattan Unfurledby Matteo Pericoli
Reviewed February 5, 2005.
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2004. Available at Sembach Library (J 741.945 PER). The two-books-in-one format of this book makes it fascinating to kids even if the content weren’t so interesting. In 2001, Matteo Pericoli wrote a book called Manhattan Unfurled consisting of drawings of the skyline of Manhattan as seen from the Hudson River. In See the City, he presents the same drawings to kids, explaining why the skyline attracted him and what he learned about the city by drawing it. He also includes amusing notes on the pictures. (My favorite is “The biggest wave I ever drew in my life.”) I showed a few pages to my kids, and my 10-year-old simply had to read it himself. He enjoyed recognizing parts of the city from his Spiderman video game, which goes to show that you can enjoy this book even if you’ve never been to New York. Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
