****Show! Don't Tell!Secrets of Writingby Josephine Nobissoillustrated by Eva Montanari Reviewed October 1, 2004.
Gingerbread House, Westhampton Beach, New York, 2004. 44 pages. Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #7, Children's Nonfiction Show; Don’t Tell! is a writing workshop in a picture book. The author, Josephine Nobisso, has given hundreds of writing workshops, and now she has distilled her ideas, with tried and true advice, into a book. The book talks about adjectives and nouns and shows us how nouns can actually be more specific than adjectives. It talks about the five senses, giving the reader things to try describing, using nouns and a few well-chosen adjectives. We’re given examples for four of the five senses—something to look at, something to feel, something to smell, and something to listen to. Then the reader is encouraged to describe these sensations. For taste, the reader is encouraged to go off and eat something—all in the “intrest” (oops) of language arts! This book could have some exciting results in the hands of a good teacher. As an individual writer, it gives me things to think about and practice. Reviews of other books by Josephine Nobisso: In English, Of Course! The Weight of a Mass Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
