****Under the Spell of the MoonArt for Children from the World's Great IllustratorsReviewed February 23, 2005.
A Groundwood Book, Douglas & McIntyre, Berkeley, 2004. 80 pages. Available at Sembach Library (J 741.642 UND). Every two-page spread of this beautiful book has a painting by a different award-winning illustrator of children’s books, from countries all over the world. Each illustration accompanies a short poem, with the original language and the English translation both given. Under the Spell of the Moon is sponsored by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), with a foreword by Katherine Paterson talking about the founder’s dream of a peaceful world for children, nourishing children with books and teaching them about children of other cultures who also long to grow up in a world of peace. I especially like seeing all the different languages represented—many I can sound out, and many that I have no idea how to pronounce. There is also an amazing variety of artistic styles represented, and in many the words are worked into the art. This is a beautiful and mind-broadening book. Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
