***Song of Creationby Paul Goble Reviewed
April 22, 2005.
Eerdman’s Books for Young Readers, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 2004. 32 pages. Available at Sembach Library (J 242 GOB). This is a lovely book of praise. I would enjoy reading it aloud to a young child. The author took a song of praise from The Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Young Men, found in The Liturgy of the Hours and The Book of Common Prayer. He adapted it slightly to fit the illustrations, which portray all manner of American wildlife. The text is simple and repetitive. As an example: “O all you works of the Lord, bless you the Lord: praise him, and magnify him forever.” In smaller print, next to appropriate pictures, we see: “O you meadowlarks, bless you the Lord: praise him, and magnify him forever. O you magpies, bless you the Lord: praise him, and magnify him forever. O you dandelions, bless you the Lord: Praise him, and magnify him forever.” With such simple text, the illustrations are what make the book beautiful, with creatures depicted ranging from moths to elk. “O let all people bless the Lord.” Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund.
