****The Future of the EarthAn Introduction to Sustainable Development for Young Readersby Yann Arthus-Bertrandadapted by Robert Burleightext by Philippe J. Dubois and Valérie Guidouxdrawings by Sylvia Bataille Reviewed April
22, 2005.
Harry N. Abrams, Publishers, New York, 2004. 74 pages. Available at Sembach Library (J MCN 338.9 DUB). The Future of the Earth takes many stunning photographs from the amazing book The Earth from Above and places them in an over-sized picture book, with explanations for young readers of important environmental issues and how they relate to the beautiful pictures. For example, a picture of farmland in France with only one lone tree begins a discussion of sustainable development and intensive farming. A picture of a coral reef accompanies statistics about how coral reefs are being threatened. A picture of Paris introduces discussion of air pollution. This is an eye-catching and tasteful way to introduce young readers to some of the global issues that will surely still be present when they are adults. The photographs make this book a joy to look through even without reading the text.
