***Take Command, Captain Farragut!

by Peter and Connie Roop

illustrated by Michael McCurcy

Reviewed November 10, 2002.
Atheneum Books for Young Readers, New York, 2002.  44 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (JB FAR)

This is a fun little book about David Glasgow Farragut, who became a midshipman in the United States Navy when he was nine years old.  As an officer, any seaman was required to obey his orders.  He fought in the War of 1812, and his vessel captured so many other ships that he was given command of one of those prizes.  Imagine the reaction of the defeated captain when a ten-year-old came to take command of his ship!

This is an interesting and well-told story.
