***PhantastesA Faerie Romanceby George MacDonald Reviewed July 8, 2002.
Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1999. First published in 1858. Well, I love George MacDonald’s nonfiction, and I love his children’s fairy tales. However, it was probably a big mistake to try to read this one when I was jet lagged. This was nothing like a modern fantasy novel. In some ways
it was refreshingly like a fairy tale. However, the incidents seemed
disjointed and hard to follow when I was extremely tired. I have
a feeling there may have been deep symbolism that I completely missed.
C. S. Lewis, in the introduction, reports that when he read Phantastes,
he “had crossed a great frontier.” I found it interesting that he
used the idea of a man’s Shadow being released and following him decades
before Ursula LeGuin used the idea in The Wizard of Earthsea.
