This is a family saga based on the lives of the author’s great-great-great-grandmother and two generations of descendants who were born in slavery.  It wasn’t exactly a happy story, which suited my mood this week just fine.  However, it was well-written and full of hope for these strong women who managed to create better lives for their daughters, culminating in Lalita Tademy, who was a vice-president of Sun Microsystems.  A beautiful book.
