****Davita's Harp****The Chosen****The Promise****My Name Is Asher Lev****The Gift of Asher Levby Chaim Potok Reviewed November
11, 2001.
Some available at Sembach Library (F POT). These don’t really fit my criteria of books I have read more than once, nor are they really “old” favorites. I read them after I got married, on my husband’s recommendation. However, I wanted to mention them before I review Chaim Potok's newest. Chaim Potok is an amazing author. He explores the Jewish experience, but his books are mesmerizing for more than just the topic. I wish I knew how he does it. He draws you into the story and makes you care. He also makes you think. His books are bigger than just the story presented. My Name Is Asher Lev, for example, is about a Jewish boy who is a gifted artist. His family and community don’t approve of his work. This book makes you think about creativity and talents and much more. This week, I had a discussion about how fiction teaches you to see the world from other people’s perspectives. Chaim Potok’s books epitomize that. His characters live very different lives from mine, yet he draws me thoroughly into their experiences.
