***Flowers in the Rain and Other Stories

by Rosamunde Pilcher

Reviewed January 8, 2002.
St. Martin’s Paperbacks.  1991.  305 pages.

My husband and I travelled to Rothenburg ob der Tauber this week for our 15th wedding anniversary.  I wanted something nice and romantic, but easy to put down, to dip into on the journey.  I grabbed this old paperback, and it turned out to be exactly that.

The stories were originally published in Good Housekeeping, and other ladies’ magazines.  There was a nice variety.  They weren’t all romantic, but were all nice, enjoyable stories.  Exactly what I had in mind.  One was even about a woman’s 30th wedding anniversary, so it seemed especially appropriate.

I’m not sure whether this particular collection is still in print, but I can recommend anything else written by Rosamunde Pilcher.  Admittedly, these magazine stories were lighter than most of her work, but all of her books leave you with a good feeling.  I especially enjoyed her latest, Winter Solstice, (which we do have at the Sembach Library), and everyone I’ve recommended it to has also found it delightful.
