****The Writer's Book of HopeGetting from Frustration to Publicationby Ralph Keyes Reviewed
March 8, 2004.
An Owl Book (Henry Holt), New York, 2003. 222 pages. Available at Sembach Library (808.0201 KEY). Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #3, Nonfiction for Writers Ralph Keyes is the author of two fantastic books I’ve read—Timelock, and The Courage to Write. This new book is a tremendously encouraging one for people like me who’ve always wanted to be a published writer. It gives me exactly the encouragement I need to keep plugging away until I succeed some day. Ralph Keyes even says that discouragement is a sign that you’re on the right track. He gives us scores of examples of great writers who got discouraged, and says “Dark, downhearted days can be a sign that something important is struggling to emerge from the caverns of our psyches.” He covers all aspects of the writing process. He fights the excuses people make to never begin. He talks about dealing with rejection. He tells the inevitable stories of the number of rejections great authors received before their big successes. And he even covers the difficulties of getting bad reviews after you do get published. If you dream of being a writer, not only will this book help you pursue your dream until it happens, it will also comfort you as you continue on your journey. A real gem.
