****Lighthouses of Europephotographs by Philip Plisson and Guillaume Plissontext by Daniel Charles Reviewed March 29, 2005.
Watson-Guptill Publications, New York, 2001. Originally published in France in 1999. 240 pages. Available at Sembach Library (OS 387.155 PLI). Sonderbooks Stand-out 2005 (#3, Photography) Lighthouses of Europe is an oversized book filled with stunning photographs of lighthouses all along the Atlantic Coast of Europe, from Scotland to Portugal. The pictures alone make this book a treasure—at least a third of them would make wonderful posters all by themselves. Along with that, you get the history of lighthouses in general, and the individual lighthouses in particular. The book also includes maps and tells which lighthouses are open to the public, which are inhabited, and which are automated. Pictures highlight two hundred and thirty of them, organized by country, from north to south. If I lived closer to the Atlantic Ocean, I would buy a copy of this book and see how many of the lighthouses I could visit. As it is, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting them vicariously and feasting my eyes on these beautiful lighthouses on lonely coasts.
