****Mr. Maxwell's Mouseby Frank Aschillustrated by Devin Asch Reviewed October 26, 2004.
Kids Can Press, Tonawanda, New York, 2004. 32 pages. Available at Sembach Library (E ASC). Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #6, Picture Books Mr. Maxwell is a distinguished cat who has just received a promotion. He goes to a fine restaurant to celebrate, the Paw and Claw. There he deviates from his usual choice and orders a raw mouse for his entrée. All the mice at the Paw and Claw are fresh and healthy, and bred for plumpness and politeness as well. The mouse is indeed excessively polite and has an extended conversation with Mr. Maxwell. Readers watch with delight as he uses his politeness to find an opportunity to escape. Perhaps he was not as reconciled to his fate as he led Mr. Maxwell to believe. This delightful story of cleverness reminded me of William Steig’s Dr. DeSoto, with a mouse outwitting a much bigger predator. Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
