****The Cat Who Walked Across Franceby Kate Bankspictures by Georg Hallensleben
Reviewed May 7, 2004.
Frances Foster Books (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), New York, 2004. 32 pages. Available at Sembach Library (E BAN). Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #5, Picture Books I love the paintings in this beautiful book. The story is simple. A little cat lives by the sea with an old woman. When the woman dies, he’s sent north with her belongings, but there he’s neglected. So he sets out across France, thinking of the sounds and smells and sights of his home by the sea. Beautiful, vibrant, impressionistic paintings show the cat’s journey, quietly displaying in the background major landmarks of France. A simple map on the back cover diagrams the cat’s journey. We see the cathedral in Rouen, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the palace in Chambord, and more. Even the pictures without major landscapes evoke the beautiful countryside of France. A fantastic backdrop for a warm and wonderful story. Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
