****Treasure Island

by Robert Louis Stevenson

Reviewed August 1, 2002.
A Sonderbooks' Best Book of 2002 (#2, Young Adult Historical Rereads)
Grosset & Dunlap, 1989.  Originally written in 1888.  342 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (JF STE).

This is the great classic pirate yarn.  I read it again because a new sequel has been written, and I wanted to read the original first.

My kids have seen the Muppet version, and the movie The Pagemaster refers to Treasure Island.  The original is much better, and well deserves its fame.  From the spooky atmosphere at the beginning to the surprise finish, this book is full of suspense and excitement.  The character of Long John Silver is complex--No simple villain here.  I think I’m going to try it as my next family read-aloud.  There is some old-fashioned language, but the story doesn’t get old.
