***Dragon's Breathby E. D. Baker Reviewed March 21, 2004.
Bloomsbury, New York, 2003. 292 pages. Available at Sembach Library (JF BAK). Dragon’s Breath is the sequel to The Frog Princess, and it’s got more good, light-hearted fun. Princess Emerelda (Emma for short) is no longer a frog, but she’s still a witch in training. Her aunt Grassina desperately wants to figure out how to change her beloved Haywood back into a human. Emma and her aunt, together with former frog Prince Eadric, set out on a series of adventures to figure out how to do that. Meanwhile, Emma’s father’s kingdom is in danger, and they need the Green Witch Grassina to protect them, if only she weren’t so preoccupied with Haywood. This book is entertaining and funny. It didn’t have a strong feeling of suspense, since they seemed to blunder from one quest to another and you could be sure something fortuitous would get them each thing they needed. That kept me from being thoroughly engaged with the story. Still, you can’t help liking Emma and Eadric. I will be watching for a third book, especially since the book ends with a distressing predicament to one of the characters, which I fondly hope will be cleared up.
