by Jean Thesman

Reviewed August 19, 2002.
Viking, 2002.  195 pages.

This is a different kind of fantasy novel, a fairy story set in a Darkwood in 1941 Washington State.  Charlotte Thacker has been sent away from home because her mother has tuberculosis and her father is serving with the army at Pearl Harbor.  She notices some strange things involving her adopted little brother Will, having something to do with the woods near the hotel where they are staying.

The book alternates between Charlotte’s perspective and that of the creatures of the Darkwood.  The book is well-written and keeps the reader interested in finding out what role Will and Charlotte have to play.  There is also suspense as we realize that they and the Darkwood are in danger.

Another book by Jean Thesman:
In the House of the Queen's Beasts
