****The Wrong Reflectionby Gillian Bradshaw Reviewed April 22, 2005.
Ace Books, New York, 2000. 362 pages. Sonderbooks Stand-out 2005 (#3, Science Fiction) Sandra Murray almost didn’t stop when she saw the car crashed in the ditch. When she does, she ends up saving a man’s life. Naturally, she’s curious about the person she saved. When she goes to the hospital to visit him, she finds him terrified. He doesn’t believe that he is Paul Anderson, the person whose wallet he was carrying and whose car he was driving. He looks in the mirror and does not believe that the right face is looking back at him. Why does meeting the president of the company he worked for fill him with fear? Why doesn’t he know how to do the simplest acts of daily living? Sandra gets drawn in to helping this man, and the puzzle grows. I love Gillian Bradshaw’s writing. This is now the second science fiction book of hers I’ve read, and they have quite a different flavor than the rich backgrounds of her historical novels. However, she still effortlessly gets us into the minds and hearts of her characters. The plot of The Wrong Reflection seemed to me just a tiny bit hokey, but I could enjoy it in the hands of a master writer like Gillian Bradshaw.
