****In the Spirit of Happiness

Spiritual Wisdom for Living

by The Monks of New Skete

Reviewed May 25, 2004.
Back Bay Books (Little, Brown and Company), Boston, 1999.  319 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (255 MON).

In the Spirit of Happiness is a book about living the spiritual life, about pleasing God and therefore being happy.  As the monks say, “If God made us to know, love, and serve him in this world, and to be happy with him in the next, if he made us to become like him, then it must be that we’ve got to become happy.  Because God is absolutely, without doubt, the happiest being around.  You can’t find a happier one.”

The writers are monks, and they explain the monastic life, but they never claim that that’s what everyone should do.  However, they do present principles from their lives as a monk that anyone can apply to their own walk with God.

I read through this book slowly and meditatively and found many nuggets of wisdom.
