****Leonardo the Terrible Monster

by Mo Willems

Reviewed December 11, 2005.
Hyperion Books for Children, New York, 2005.  42 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (E WIL).

Leonardo is a terrible monster—terrible at being a monster, that is.  He’s simply not good at scaring anyone.

However, Leonardo is determined to scare someone.  He finds a boy who will be easy to scare and determines to scare the tuna salad out of him.

When he tries it, things turn out a little differently than Leonardo expects.

This book, by the author of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, features more of Mo Willems’ exuberant cartoon illustrations.  Again, he uses the position of the words (with no background) to express the emotions of the kids.  It’s a simple story, but fun to read and heart-warming.
