****Robert's Snowflakes

Artists' Snowflakes for Cancer's Cure

compiled by Grace Lin and Robert Mercer

Reviewed January 2, 2006.
Viking, New York, 2005.  38 pages.
Available at Sembach Library (E ROB).

There’s a nice story behind this book.  It was published to raise money for cancer research, since Robert Mercer’s life may depend on a breakthrough in cancer research.  Grace Lin had already published a book called _Robert’s Snow_ based on a story she’d told her Robert when he was worn out from his treatments.

Now that his cancer has returned, after a time when he was cancer-free, the couple recruited children’s book artists to paint wooden snowflakes to be auctioned off.  They got a wonderful response and raised over $100,000 for cancer research.

But they didn’t let the beautiful snowflakes melt away.  They compiled copies of them in this book, along with Haiku about snow, written by famous children’s writers.  The result is beautiful.  The artists include several Caldecott medalists, but all the snowflakes are lovely.

This is a wonderful book to browse through in a cozy corner on a cold wintry day.
