***A Hidden Magicby Vivian Vande VeldeReviewed February 18, 2004.
Magic Carpet Books (Harcourt), New York, 1985. 176 pages. Available at Sembach Library (JF VAN). Here’s a quick-reading and completely delightful twist on the traditional fairy tale. Jennifer’s a plain, ordinary-looking, but nice princess. One day, she meets the most handsome prince she’s ever seen in her life. Unfortunately, he’s rather conceited, and not all that bright. He leads them into the enchanted forest and there manages to get himself put under a sleeping spell. Jennifer’s a nice girl. She doesn’t feel like she can just leave him there. A kiss doesn’t work, so she goes off to find someone to help her break the spell. Talking to an Old Witch doesn’t work, but she does manage to get a sorcerer to come along. Unfortunately, he’s not all that powerful, and his ideas seem to get them into further trouble. Jennifer’s adventures are entertaining and amusing. The end is especially clever and satisfying. This is a fun, light-hearted story for when you're in the mood for a fairy tale.
