***The Beastly Arms

by Patrick Jennings

Reviewed August 2001.

This book is special because of the character of Nickel Dill.  He’s a sixth grade boy who loves photography and animals.  He takes pictures of clouds shaped like animals and develops them in the dark room at the college where his Mom teaches.  When he sees people, he notices what animal they look like.  He looks like a bushbaby himself.

Nickel and his mother have to move out of their apartment because the rent is being raised.  When they are looking downtown, they run across the Beastly Arms and Nickel becomes fascinated with the place and the owner and the secret that they are hiding.  An excellent book.  This author knew his characters and made them live.

Reader comment:  An anonymous reader gives this book Four Stars with the comment, "It was definitely good.  And had a very good secret.  One of the best.
