***The Monsters of Morley Manor

A Madcap Adventure by Bruce Coville

Reviewed December 31, 2001.
Harcourt, 2001.  224 pages.  Available at Sembach Library (JF COV).

A “madcap adventure” is a good way to describe this book.  My older son informs me that the story originally appeared as individual chapters at the back of Bruce Coville’s earlier Book of Monsters, Book of Aliens, Book of Magic, and so on.  This, perhaps, explains why it has a little of everything--monsters, magic, aliens, science fiction, you name it.

The story is a little wild, but is nothing if not imaginative, and quite fun.  It’s a little long--my younger son seemed to enjoy it, but didn’t persevere to the end, and I almost put it aside myself.  However, I think that kids in around fourth to fifth grades might especially enjoy it.

Reviews of other books by Bruce Coville:
Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher
Half-Human
William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
William Shakespeare's Hamlet
Moongobble and Me: The Dragon of Doom
