*****Jane Eyre

by Charlotte Bronte

Reviewed November 21, 2001.
Many different editions are available.  Written in 1848.
Available at Sembach Library (F BRO).

Since I didn’t read any adult fiction this week, I offer this old classic romance.  They don’t make them quite like this any more.  This book tells the story of Jane Eyre, who begins life as an unwanted orphan and goes on to become a governess in the home of a dark, brooding man.  The romance is delicately and cleverly presented, but a dark mystery haunts Jane’s future.  When was the last time you read a novel where the heroine fled rather than enter an illicit relationship?

According to Meditations on Middle Earth, J. R. R. Tolkien felt that the only people who disapprove of folks escaping into books are jailers.  If you’d like an escape to a completely different world of bygone times, this is an excellent book to try.
