*****A Year with C. S. LewisDaily Readings from His Classic Worksedited by Patricia S. Klein Reviewed January 10, 2005.
HarperSanFrancisco, 2003. 410 pages. Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #1, Christian Nonfiction I bought this book with birthday money, so I’ve only been reading it for half of the year, but I’m very pleased with it. C. S. Lewis is perfect for reading short bits at a time, because he’s pithy and quotable, and he packs powerful thoughts into a short space. This way, I can read a small selection from his works and mull it over before going on to something else. The editor does group selections about one idea together, so more than once I kept reading several days worth of selections because I wanted to hear more. C. S. Lewis was a great Christian thinker. He talks about the philosophy of Christianity—why be a Christian, why God does what he does—as well as looking at practical applications like how we should treat our neighbors. For anyone who’s read C. S. Lewis, you’ll appreciate the idea of a book of short selections from his works. For anyone who hasn’t read C. S. Lewis’s nonfiction writings yet, this book is an excellent introduction. I know I won’t stop when I get to June, but will enjoy reading these words of wisdom for the entire year of 2005.
