Holiday House, New York, 2004. 32 pages. Available at Sembach Library (E STO). Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #11, Picture Books Like The Cat Who Walked Across France, this book will find a special place in the hearts of kids and adults who have visited and loved Paris. However, it’s a great story for anyone, with Paris sights simply providing a wonderful background. Monsieur Monmouton is a farmer in the French countryside with “eleven very silly sheep, five curious geese, three greedy goats, four ruminating cows, a flock of fluttering pigeons, two enormous pigs, nine noisy chickens, a rather pompous rooster, and one extremely hardworking dog.” Often, people from Paris come to stay near his farm, and they invite Monsieur Monmouton to visit them in return. The animals take the invitation to heart and plan a trip. The picture of all of those animals squeezed into one car is great fun. Together, they explore all the sights of Paris, bringing delightful chaos in their wake. I love the way it ends, with the animals seeing a poster about New York. I hope that Catherine Stock writes a book about that trip! Copyright © 2005 Sondra Eklund. All
