****Duck for Presidentby Doreen Croninillustrated by Betsy Lewin

June 5, 2004.
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, New York, 2004. 40 pages. Available at Sembach Library (E CRO). Sonderbooks Stand-out 2004, #10, Picture Books This book deals with the same subversive animals who were the stars of the fabulous Click, Clack, Moo, and Giggle, Giggle, Quack. Duck isn’t happy with the way Farmer Brown is running the farm. So he holds an election, promising a “kinder, gentler farm.” When he wins, the job is an awful lot of work, so he sets his sights higher. He runs for governor and wins by a nose, even after a recount. Running a state is even more hard work than running a farm. He decides to run for President. He kisses babies. He rides in parades. “He even played the saxophone on late-night television.” Once again, the vote is close and requires a recount, but duck emerges victorious. However, running a country is the hardest job of all. This book may be even a little more funny to parents than it is to their kids, with the subtle jibes at the election process in America today. However, all will enjoy watching the ambitious duck as he climbs higher and higher.
